Frequently Asked Questions
Who will I see at Serene Acupuncture Cork?
You’ll be treated by Sue Reen, Lic.Ac. (ICTCM), a qualified acupuncturist registered with the Professional Register of Traditional Chinese Medicine (PRTCM). Treatments combine classical Chinese medicine wisdom with a calm, person-centred approach for lasting results.
Is acupuncture covered by Irish health insurance?
Many providers—including Vhi, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health—offer partial refunds for acupuncture treatments with a PRTCM-registered practitioner. Coverage depends on your plan; check with your insurer. Itemised receipts are provided.
Can I claim tax relief on acupuncture treatments?
Yes. Revenue allows tax relief (usually 20%) on qualifying health expenses. Keep receipts for your claim.
What happens during my first acupuncture appointment?
Your 60–75 minute initial consultation includes:
A full Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment.
Pulse and tongue diagnosis.
A tailored acupuncture treatment.
We’ll address your main concerns, e.g.period pain, fertility, fatigue, stress, chronic pain, etc, while considering your overall health and lifestyle.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel only a light tingling or dull sensation. Needles are fine, sterile, and single-use. Comfort is prioritised at all times.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes! When provided by a fully qualified, registered practitioner. Minor effects like light bruising or tiredness can occur but pass quickly.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition and how long you’ve had it. Many notice improvement within 3–4 sessions; chronic conditions often need a short course before moving to maintenance.
What conditions do you treat?
I specialise in:
Women’s health & fertility acupuncture — support for natural conception, IVF, menstrual health, and menopause.
Pregnancy acupuncture — gentle care for nausea, fatigue, back or pelvic pain, anxiety, and labour preparation.
Chronic pain relief — back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia.
Acupuncture for fatigue — ME/CFS, Long COVID, low energy.
Stress & emotional wellbeing — anxiety, low mood, burnout.
Respiratory health support — asthma, sinus issues, hay fever.
Can I have acupuncture if I’m pregnant or trying to conceive?
Yes. Acupuncture is widely used to support natural conception, IVF cycles, and overall reproductive health. Treatments can help regulate menstrual cycles, improve blood flow to the uterus, balance hormones, and reduce stress, creating a healthier environment for conception.
During pregnancy, acupuncture is adapted for each stage. It can ease symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, back or pelvic pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbance. In the final weeks, gentle points may be used to encourage the body’s natural preparation for labour. Certain points are avoided for safety, and every session is tailored to your needs at that moment.
Do I need to stop my medication?
No, acupuncture complements conventional care. Always follow your doctor’s advice on medication.
What should I wear or bring?
Loose, comfortable clothing that can roll above elbows and knees. Bring any relevant test results or medication lists.
What might I feel after acupuncture?
Clients often report relaxation, better sleep, and lighter mood. Occasionally you may feel tired or emotional briefly, this is normal.
